day 294 – four grasping things

The clamp at the top right I found at an old abandoned bottling factory was inexplicably draped in a tree just as shown here.  The top left door knob was still attached to the door as was the car door handle below.  The vegetation pretty much over took the doors attached to both handles.  While most of these items were obscured by natural re-growth, because they are metal they will take many years decompose.

Even though nature reasserts its presence in spaces impacted by man’s presence, the natural landscape has been irrevocably changed.  Each piece of garbage that we leave behind is the seed for change in the evolution of our planet.  Not only is the full potential of these plantings only just beginning to be realized, but what does become apparent is that as man made objects and spaces are enveloped in natural re-growth, they combine to make a new space that is both nature made and man made.

day 293 – four belt buckles

I was attracted to these belts because they reminded me of snakes in the grass. For me their twisting forms help conjure the idea of detritus imitating nature.  As they decompose the belts seem to mimic the grasses around them helping to blur the lines between objects and surroundings.

day 291 – four door panels

I like to explore the countryside carrying my little camera to record the things that catch my attention.   These four door panels were lain out like this in the middle of a field next to railway tracks.   They had obviously been there for quite some time and were part of large collection of items abandoned at this site.

What inspires me in a site like this is seeing objects that are slowly decaying into the surrounding landscape.  These wood panels will take years to disappear.  Insects will move in and begin the process of breaking down the wood fibres in the plywood, moss will creep accross the surface, rot will set in wherever the wood is wet.  Grasses and small trees will begin to sprout around and through and slowly all parts  will be covered by surrounding vegetation.

day 239 – four real and unreal antlers

day 183 – Four Skulz

Day 164 – Four Spoons

I have a budding collection of different types of spoons. Here’s a small assortment.

Four spoons

day 71 – four pieces of Frida Khalo paraphanelia

Maybe it’s form all the times I’ve been to Mexico or seeing her work in the TATE when I was in London, but I’ve always loved Frida Kahlo’s work. And apparently my friends and family know this too. Here are four (I have many more) pieces of reproduced Frida Kahlo art from my apartment.

Left- Right

– portrait given to me by my dad

– ‘Las Dos Fridas’ also given to me by my dad

– magnet I bought at Kustum Kulture

day 68 – four ceramic vases and their inhabitants

Four ceramic vases that I use to house my fresh and dead flowers/plants

Left – Right

Lime green circular vase from Village Antiques in Osborne Village – contains unknown purple flowers purchased from Safeway.

Baby Head vase – a gift from my best friend Kaja – found in a Calgary antique store – contains a cactus purchased from Safeway two years ago – not sure how it is still alive as I may not have watered it for a year…

Bubble/cushion vase acquired at the University of Manitoba Ceramics sale (artist unknown) – contains dead daisies purchased from Superstore white (& alive), which I then dyed blue with food colouring.

Blue figure vase purchased off etsy three years ago (I searched high and low for the artist name but unfortunately I couldn’t find it) – contains one dead tomato plant found outside ace art in the exchange district in a box labelled “take me before I die!”

day 67 – four pieces of ceramic dishware to pay hommage to…

For my first ‘four’ I’ve decided to gather four broken ceramic dishware that up until last Wednesday, were fully intact. The sky decided to fall in my kitchen last week and due to a negligent unknown carpenter, about 80% of my dishware was lost. I heard a crash and walked into my kitchen to find my entire cupboard unit had fallen off the wall and the kitchen was filled with glass. This is an hommage to those favourite dishes lost.
